Ashiko RATOVO, a multidisciplinary artist, began her career by exploring acrylic painting.

In 2022, she created a 15m² mural titled “Feo” or “Voice”, in collaboration with the group Axian, at Kube B, located in the Galaxy Andraharo building in Madagascar.

Later that year, in October, she presented her first solo exhibition with the project “Ny Vohitri’ny Nofy” or “The Reliefs of Dreams”, at Art’Home Ankadilalana, in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Driven by a constant desire for evolution, she is always looking to enrich her creations. This drive led her to develop her own watercolor brand, “Lokorano”, which has allowed her to create her recent works.

Venturing into animation with the association “Les Femmes s’animent”, Ashiko participated in the Annecy International Short Film Festival in June 2023. She later won the “Courant du Monde” award, presented by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the Afrika Forum 2023 in Paris.

Winner of the 7th edition of the Paritanan prize, she was awarded an artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris for the research and development of her project titled “Tsy Manan-kialofana” or “Homeless”, which she later exhibited at Fondation H in Paris in October 2023, and at the French Institute of Madagascar in March 2024.

Multidisciplinary artist Ashiko RATOVO questions the human condition through her artistic projects. Painting, drawing, and sculpture are, for her, forms of expression that translate her thirst for creation.

Abstract scenes centered around different stages of life, the subconscious, or emotions—everything that touches the inner and outer environment of humanity. A re-adaptation of various life scenes or states of mind forms through her paintings. As a woman in the Malagasy art scene, Ashiko RATOVO uses her works to express a desire to deconstruct mindsets around stereotypes and the rules society imposes on women.

Her works challenge the customs and norms of her country, which remains largely conservative. Her creative goal is to deconstruct preconceived ideas, especially those focused on the female gender. She enjoys showcasing the complexity of being human, balancing the will to live with the condition of the body.

In her artistic approach, she guides viewers to see the world as she perceives it, not forcing them to adopt her view but offering them a new perspective through her paintings, sculptures, and texts.

Through abstract and blurred painting, Ashiko addresses the stereotypes and rules that Malagasy society imposes on women. Her work highlights traditional expectations and the challenges women face, inviting the viewer to reflect on their condition in Madagascar.
