Sarah POUGET GILLYBOEUF

Artist Sarah Pouget Gillyboeuf develops a contemporary practice of straw marquetry. Trained in France at the Atelier Lison de Caunes—an international reference in the field—she acquired exceptional technical mastery, which she now places at the service of a personal and engaged body of work. Based in Mauritius, her practice is nourished by cultural intersections, island light, and a reflection on themes of dialogue, femininity, and transmission. Her works, all unique pieces, question the boundary between fine craftsmanship and contemporary art.

“My work in straw marquetry explores the meeting of plant-based material, vibrant color, and controlled gesture. I work without templates or tracing, using only ruler cuts and freehand technique, in total mastery of the gesture, where each choice is precise, intentional, and definitive.

Color

Color occupies a central place in my work. Bold and luminous, it acts as an emotional language and a visual energy. Combined with the natural reflections of straw, it captures light, creates vibrations, and gives the works a physical and sensory presence.

Compositions

My compositions are based on a balance between rigor and freedom. The direct gesture structures space, guides the eye, and establishes rhythms. Forms are organized through tensions, repetitions, or flows, revealing a thoughtful construction in which each element finds its place within an overall coherence.

Dialogue

Dialogue runs through my entire approach: dialogue between fine craftsmanship and contemporary art, between tradition and modernity, between artistic references and personal language.”
